La Tour Fondue: history and underwater treasures

Perched at the south-eastern tip of the Presqu’île de Giens, Le Fort du Pradeau, more commonly known as “La Tour Fondue”, represents much more than just an access point to Porquerolles. Built in the XVIIᵉ century under the reign of Louis XIV, this structure originally had a military vocation. It was part of a set of fortifications designed to defend the Var coast against maritime incursions.

After a long period of closure to the public, followed by a long-awaited renovation, the fort is now home to the Musée de la Tour Fondue, which invites you to explore the captivating history of this site, as well as the Bay of Giens. Through interactive exhibits and a variety of visual aids, you’ll have the opportunity to understand the strategic importance of the Tower during its military era, as well as contemporary methods of underwater excavation. Models, plans and old maps highlight the essential role of this structure in protecting the Mediterranean coastline.

Between underwater adventures and water sports, a stay at Camping La Tour Fondue offers an unforgettable experience. In Hyères and on the Presqu’île de Giens, the preserved environment, marine biodiversity and numerous infrastructures dedicated to water sports guarantee total immersion in nature.
